Here is the recap from the Accessibility team: thanks Andrea!

The Accessibility team was led by Andrea Fercia.

It has been a real pleasure seeing a pretty good number of participants attending the accessibility session.
The team was composed mostly by designers and front end developers so we haven’t actually coded or created a patch. Actually, the aim of a Contributor Day is not just about coding. It’s about helping people get familiar with the process of contributing to WordPress and encouraging everyone to contribute, based on their own expertise and skills.

In the first half of the day we talked about how web accessibility can benefit everyone, not just people who use assistive technologies. As an introduction to accessibility, we talked about keyboard accessibility and the challenges to face to make a web interface easy to use to people who don’t use a mouse. We reviewed and compared a few web sites with the WordPress admin pages, evaluating already implemented solutions and possible improvements.

In the second half of the day new contributors joined our group! We had the opportunity to talk about web interfaces and how they must provide both visual feedbacks and textual alternatives in order to convey the same information to all users, including people who use assistive technologies. Our focus was on the Comments admin screen in WordPress, trying to find an effective way to communicate the various comments statuses.

A big thanks to all the participants and if you’re willing to help improve the WordPress accessibility, please do join us on our Slack channel!
